Why You Should Always Have A Certified Dogger or Rigger With A Crane

Published 9 February 2023

There are many things to consider when operating a crane. One of the most important is having a certified dogger or rigger on site. Here's why:

What is a dogger and rigger?

A dogger is a worker trained in the safe operation of cranes and other lifting equipment. They are responsible for ensuring that all materials are safely secured, slings are free from defects and rated to handle the intended load, and that the crane is being operated properly.

A rigger is an individual who sets up, operates and maintains cranes and other lifting equipment. They are responsible for ensuring that tools, rigging and materials are in proper working order, as well as making sure the crane is being operated safely.

In some cases, both a dogger and rigger may be required to ensure the safety of the worksite.

You need to be trained to operate a crane

A certified dogger or rigger has undergone formal training and testing on how to safely and effectively operate a crane. They know the proper signals and procedures for safely moving loads, and they understand the limitations of the crane itself.

Doggers and riggers are responsible for guiding the load, charting out lifting plans, communication between the crane operator and other staff, ensuring rigging equipment is up to code, and much more. By having an authoritative figure like a certified dogger or rigger on board, operators can rest assured that their task will be completed not just in an acceptable amount of time - but also with safety being paramount in all operations at every turn.

Having a certified dogger or rigger on site helps things run smoothly

A certified dogger or rigger on-site can help to ensure that the job is done correctly, within budget and on time. With their knowledge and experience, they can quickly identify and anticipate problems before they even arise – thus saving you costly delays and repairs down the line.

They can also provide valuable insight into how best to position the crane and equipment in order to maximise your available workspace. In addition, a certified dogger or rigger can help you select the right type of crane for your project.

Furthermore, having a rigger on site increases productivity by allowing for faster working times and decreases risks for those on the worksite.

Having a certified dogger or rigger may be required by law

Using a crane for construction or lifting operations can be a dangerous endeavour. As a result, many jurisdictions require that an experienced dogger or rigger certified by the appropriate agencies be present during crane lift operations.

If you're not sure whether or not you need a certified dogger or rigger, always err on the side of caution and hire one anyway - it's better to be safe than sorry!
