Can All Cranes Operate On The Road?

Published 25 January 2023

Cranes can be designed for a variety of purposes and applications, and some models have been specifically created for on-road operations. However, many cranes cannot safely or legally operate on public roads due to their size and weight. Therefore, it is important to research the specific crane you are considering for a project and ensure it meets local laws and regulations.

What types of cranes can be used on the road?

Hydraulic Truck Cranes

Hydraulic truck cranes are a type of mobile crane mounted onto a heavy-duty truck chassis. They can be driven on public roads and are usually under 10 tonnes in weight. This makes them ideal for urban projects where access is restricted.

Knuckleboom Cranes

Knuckleboom cranes are very similar to hydraulic truck cranes, however they offer increased manoeuvrability and can reach higher lifting heights. They are usually mounted onto a light-duty chassis and are designed to be operated on public roads.

Boom Trucks

Boom trucks feature an articulating boom and can be driven on public roads. They are often used for construction and industrial applications, as they offer greater reach and lifting capacity than other types of cranes.

Articulating Boom Cranes

Articulating boom cranes are also mounted onto a heavy-duty truck chassis and can be driven on public roads. They feature an articulating boom that is capable of reaching over obstacles.

What Legal Requirements Must Be Adhered To In Order To Operate A Crane On The Road?

  • Operating any type of crane on public roads comes with certain risks and responsibilities. It is essential that all operators adhere to the relevant safety regulations, as well as following local laws and guidelines regarding crane operation.
  • All drivers should have a valid operator’s license and the crane should be inspected and certified prior to use.
  • Ensure that the crane is suitable for on-road use.

Some cranes require a permit to drive on the road and can legally do so if the permit is approved, provided that they avoid certain roads and bridges set out by the regulating government body. To learn more about crane permits in Queensland, check out the link below from TMR QLD:

What other factors should I consider when hiring an on-road crane?

When selecting the type and size of crane for your job, there are multiple factors that must be considered. Weight and shape of the load, height from ground level to destination point, distance between loading points, environment-related factors like wind speeds as well as terrain conditions should all factor into determining the capacity necessary for your crane.

When renting a crane, it is crucial to ensure that the lifting height can reach your desired distance. Remember: cranes with higher lifting heights will come at an extra cost.

From lifting capacity to height, our diverse selection of cranes can meet any requirement. Don't hesitate to reach out if you need assistance in selecting the perfect crane for your project - we are always happy to help. Or, click here to check out our cranes.
